Mini Checked Pine for September and October 2018

We will be stitching this project published in the NeedleArts magazine from December 2017. You need the following supplies:
  • 2 pairs 8" stretcher bars
  • 8" square of 18 count mono canvas, white or sand
  • artist tape to cover the canvas edge, if desired
  • Tacks or a staple gun to attach canvas to the bars
  • a hard lead pencil (it has an "H" and number on it) OR a fabric marker OR a Pigma Micron pen
  • at least 2 #22 tapestry needles
  • #28 tapestry needle or beading needle
  • 1 skein DMC pearl cotton #5 712 (or any color you'd like to use for the background)
  • 1 skein Caron Watercolours Emerald (or DMC pearl cotton #5 in a green for the tree)
  • Kreinik #12 braid color 202HL (or any color you like for the sparkles in the tree and the border, you may use two different colors OR metallic pearl in gold or silver OR 3 skeins DMC Light Effects)
  • Gold or silver star sequin with bead for tree top (we are providing that for Baldy View members at the meeting)

Here is the one I made using threads from my stash. The tree is the suggested Watercolours thread, which gives a nice softly-textured contrast to the shinier DMC pearl cotton. I used a DMC blue and tan overdye for the background and a gold ribbon thread from stash for the trunk and gold frame. I had a metallic white I used for the flecks in the tree. I think it looks a bit like snow. This piece is a great use of stash but again, if you need to buy threads for this, #5 pearl cotton is inexpensive and awesome. The Joann's store in Ontario near the Ontario Mills has a nice selection of solid and overdyed #5 pearl cotton, the metallic pearl cotton if you want that, and they currently take competitors coupons. In fact, they will take both a coupon from Hobby Lobby and from Michael's on the same transaction!

Our scheduled Stitch-Ins are Monday September 10, Wednesday September 26, and Monday October 8. Click above on "Stitch-Ins" for more information and a map.

Our next meeting is Wednesday September 19 for Mini Checked Pine part 1. We will do part 2 at our October 17 meeting. We do not have a meeting in November and our holiday meeting is December 5 for a holiday celebration. We meet at the US Bank building, 333 N. Euclid Avenue, Ontario, California. Social time is from 6:00-7:00 and the actual meeting begins at 7:00. Always bring stitching supplies. For more information about that, click above on "Standard Stitching Supplies." VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME/

Our August Ice Cream Social

For several years, we had no scheduled meeting for August. Too many of our members were off to a national or regional seminar. Over the years, seminars shifted to different times of the year but we kept August dark. Each year the debate raged whether or not we should meet in August. Should we honor or break with tradition? Was it too hot to meet or should we offer an air-conditioned place of respite? Did our members already have enough projects?

We decided to create a new tradition.

An annual ice cream social.

We thought a few members would show up.

We had a lot of folks show up.

LIKE EVERYONE SHOWED UP.
And a new tradition was born.

Our August  15 meeting will be ICE CREAM and bring your favorite needlework-related book to share. The book can be a designer's book you love, a collection of stitch diagrams, and antique (or copy because a bunch are in the public domain now) or fictional story featuring needlework. Come share with us and have some ICE CREAM. Bring something to work on too if you like, just be aware that the room will be awash in, you guessed it, ICE CREAM.

Projects are coming though. We will be working on the Mini Checked Pine from the December 2017 issue of NeedleArts magazine, our EGA publication, in our September and October meetings. The finished item is 3" square. Here is the list of items you'll need (in addition to your chart, of course):

July Meeting

We are working on Colorplay, a color study Petite Project. Part 1 had us stitch a variety of colors in a simple design. Part 2, which we will do at our July 18 meeting, will have us evaluate the effects of our colors and also learn to use a color wheel.

We will be having our annual Ice Cream Social at our August 15 meeting. Bring your favorite needlework book along to share.

September 19 and October 17 meetings will be the Mini Checked Pine from the December 2017 issue of the EGA magazine NeedleArts. Designed by Mary Waldsmith of Owl Stitchery, this little 3-inch square piece has 16 different canvas stitches!
We meet at the US Bank building at 333 N. Euclid Avenue, Ontario, California. Social hour begins at 6:00 and the actual meeting begins at 7:00, so arrive any time between 6:00 and 6:45 to get settled in for the meeting. Bring scissors and any other stitching supplies you like. March 21 Meeting

Our member Kerry Ince, owner of We, of the Needle in Brea gave us a wonderful talk about framing. She talked about the components of a framing job, how to prepare various types of needlework for framing, and finishing options other than a frame that you can do with a framer or by yourself. Thanks, Kerry, for a great program.

Our next meeting is April 19. The program will be how to make Dorset Buttons. We will see you then!
